Download OpenDot for Mac

OpenDot is free, MIT licensed and in early access. There is no signed installer yet, but you can join the list, grab a build from GitHub or build it yourself in a few minutes.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.
  • A model: an API key from any cloud provider, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
  • To build from source: Node.js 22.19 or later and Git.

Option 1: join early access

Add your email and we will send you the download as soon as it is ready. We only email you about OpenDot. It takes ten seconds, and it is the easiest way to get a ready-made app.

Option 2: a ready-made build from GitHub

Every change to the app on main builds DMGs for both chip types in the Mac app CI on GitHub. Open the latest green run and download the OpenDot-mac artifact. Tagged versions are published on the GitHub Releases page.

Option 3: build it from source

  1. Get the code

Clone the repository and install dependencies.

    git clone https://github.com/athulsreekumar/opendot.git
    cd opendot/desktop
    npm ci
  2. Try it

Run the app with hot reload.

    npm run dev
  3. Build the app

Make a DMG for your Mac. Open it and drag OpenDot to Applications.

npm run dist:mac:arm64 # Apple silicon (M1 and later)
npm run dist:mac:x64 # Intel Macs
    npm run dist:mac # both

The first-launch warning

Early-access builds are not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS warns you the first time you open the app. Right-click OpenDot in Applications, choose Open, then Open again. Or run this once:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpenDot.app

Choose a model on first launch

OpenDot opens with a short setup where you pick a model. Paste an API key for the fastest start, or run Ollama with a model such as llama3.1 for a free, private setup. Not sure yet? OPENDOT_FAKE_PROVIDER=1 npm run dev gives you a scripted test model that needs no key, so you can look around.

Is it safe?

The full source is on GitHub under the MIT license, so you can read exactly what the app does. Everything it stores lives in ~/.opendot on your Mac, personal details are masked before cloud models see them, and keys stay in the macOS Keychain.

After you install

Once OpenDot is running, create your first Dot by describing its job in a sentence, then connect Google or Microsoft if you want it to reach your mail and calendar. Our guides cover running a local assistant with Ollama, setting up an AI email assistant for Gmail and adding MCP servers.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenDot free?

Yes. OpenDot is free and open source under the MIT license. If you connect a cloud model with your own API key, that provider bills you directly. Local models cost nothing.

Is there a Windows or Linux version?

No. OpenDot is made for the Mac. It uses the macOS Keychain and Mac apps like Calendar and Notes.

Why does macOS warn me when I open it?

Early-access builds are not notarized by Apple yet. Right-click the app and choose Open once, or run the xattr command above.

Which Macs does it run on?

macOS 14 or later, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
